How to Create Karaoke-Style Subtitles

Karaoke subtitles display text word-by-word, with a colour highlight that moves along as each word is spoken. If you've seen lyric videos on YouTube or anime fansubs with animated captions, that's the effect in action. It's eye-catching, engaging, and surprisingly easy to create with Subify.

What Are Karaoke Subtitles?

In a standard subtitle, the entire line of text appears on screen at once and disappears when the line is finished. Karaoke subtitles take a different approach: they break the line into individual words and reveal each one as it's spoken, with a moving highlight. Typically a colour bar or outline, that tracks along in real-time.

This creates a reading rhythm that matches the audio, which is why it's popular for music videos (where viewers follow along with lyrics), language learning (where learners can hear and see each word), and social media content (where on-screen text reinforces the message). Unlike static subtitles, karaoke subtitles turn captioning into a visual element rather than just a utility.

Subify's Karaoke Display Mode

Subify's karaoke feature is one of four text display modes available on the dashboard. The others are Default (full lines as spoken), Single Line (text wrapped to one line per subtitle), and Single Word (one word at a time with precise timing). When you select Karaoke mode, Subify processes the word-level timestamps from the transcription and applies a colour highlight that follows the audio as each word is spoken.

Karaoke mode works exclusively with the ASS format, which is the only format that supports styling and effects. SRT files don't have the structure to carry highlight animations.

Plan requirement: Karaoke display mode requires the ASS format, which is available on all paid plans. The Free tier provides SRT only and does not support karaoke effects.

Customising the Highlight

Subify gives you several ways to tune the karaoke highlight to fit your video:

Highlight colour. You can set the tracking highlight to any colour - white, yellow, red, or a brand colour. Choose a colour that contrasts with your subtitle text so the movement is visible.

Background box. Add a semi-transparent background behind the subtitle text. This improves readability on busy or variable video backgrounds where a plain outline might not be enough.

Outline and underline. You can add an outline around the text (with custom colour and thickness) and toggle an underline effect on the highlighted portion. These styling choices are applied on top of your main ASS styling, so custom fonts, colours, and positioning are all preserved.

The key to good karaoke subtitles is contrast. If your highlight colour is too similar to your background, the effect gets lost. Start with a high-contrast combination, for example, white text with a yellow highlight on a dark background box and adjust based on your video.

Best Use Cases

Music videos and lyric videos are the most common application. Karaoke mode turns a static lyric caption into a dynamic, sing-along experience. Language learning content benefits because learners can hear and track each word as it's spoken, reinforcing pronunciation and pacing.

Beyond those, karaoke subtitles work well for:

Social media videos that play on mute, moving text draws the eye more effectively than static captions. Anime-style fansubs, where the community expects animated subtitle effects. Educational content where a reading rhythm helps retention. And presentation slides exported as video, where on-screen text needs to appear in sync with the speaker.

If you're producing content where the subtitles are as much a visual element as the video itself, karaoke mode is worth experimenting with.

How to Get Started

Generating karaoke subtitles is straightforward. Upload your video or audio file, select the Karaoke display mode from the dashboard, and choose ASS as your download format. The karaoke timings are embedded in the ASS file automatically, no manual timing required. Once downloaded, the file plays with the word-by-word highlight in any ASS-compatible player.

For a quick test, try a short music clip or a 30-second section of your video. You can adjust the highlight colour and background in the styling panel before downloading, so experiment with a few combinations to find what works for your footage.
